How to Apply for U.S. Citizenship: A Simple Guide by Notarizr

Applying for U.S. citizenship is an exciting step, but the process can feel confusing without the right guidance. At Notarizr, we make complex paperwork simple by helping clients prepare, organize, and submit their citizenship applications with confidence.

If you need hands-on help, visit our Immigration Document Services page to learn how we support citizenship and naturalization filings.

Who Can Apply for U.S. Citizenship?

You may be eligible to apply for citizenship if you:

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Have held a green card for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen)
  • Have lived continuously in the U.S. and meet physical presence requirements
  • Can speak, read, and write basic English
  • Meet good moral character requirements

For questions about eligibility or documentation, our Immigration Support Services page explains what to expect before filing.

Step 1: File Form N-400

The citizenship process begins by completing Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization). This form can be filed online or by mail with USCIS. Accuracy is critical—mistakes or missing information can delay your application.

Notarizr assists clients with immigration form preparation to help reduce errors and processing delays.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

USCIS requires supporting documents, which may include:

  • A copy of your permanent resident card
  • Passport-style photos (if required)
  • Marriage or divorce records (if applicable)
  • Court or legal documents (if applicable)

Many of these documents require notarization. Visit our Mobile Notary Services or Online Notary Services pages for fast, convenient notarization from home or office.

Step 3: Attend Your Biometrics Appointment

After submitting your application, USCIS will schedule a biometrics appointment to collect fingerprints and photos for a background check.

Step 4: Complete the Citizenship Interview & Test

You’ll attend a USCIS interview where an officer reviews your application and administers the English and civics tests. Preparing your paperwork in advance helps ensure a smooth interview.

Step 5: Take the Oath of Allegiance

Once approved, you’ll attend a naturalization ceremony and take the Oath of Allegiance, officially becoming a U.S. citizen.
